Work around Spotify Camp Nou making good progress with completion of modifications to Carrer Menéndez y Pelayo
The changes to the environs of FC Barcelona are progressing nicely. Work is being done on the Modification to the General Metropolitan Plan (MPGM) and the operations in Carrer Menéndez y Pelayo have been declared complete. The affected section is between Avinguda Joan XXIII and Carrer Martí i Franquès.
The goal is to generate an open space around the stadium, with no outer barrier or sloping sections, and to improve vehicle and pedestrian access to the site. Over 22,000 m2 of space has been redeveloped, with the addition of 4,000 m2 of green spaces. There are lanes in both directions and a service lane, and wide pavements. This is a major improvement, because until a few months ago, there was no walkways next to the cemetery.
21 three-metre benches have been added and sixteen 60cm wooden seats, as well a better performance and more energy efficient lighting system and 65 trees have been planted. The gardening work will be completed once ENDESA has finished its work on the areas where the trees are being positioned.
New bike lane
There is now a bike lane along the avenue as far as Plaça Pius XII, meaning there is a connection between Menéndez y Pelayo as far as Diagonal. Work has also been done on the roundabout between Avinguda Joan XXIII and Menéndez y Pelayo, with improved geometry as well as a gardened section next to La Masia.
The work in Menéndez y Pelayo is a major step forward with the enhancement of the urban developments around Spotify Camp Nou and the future Espai Barça, and follows on from the work done in the same street around Access 6 to the stadium. A total of 11 hectares of land are set to be redeveloped, all by the club in liaison with local technical teams, the ultimate goal being to offer a more amenable district with more green areas and cycling zones.
The next steps
The second phase of work in Avinguda Joan XXIII should be getting under way in the coming months, focusing on Access 5 to the Spotify Camp Nou, and as far as the roundabout connecting to Carrer Arístides Maillol. The road will be made narrower, having three lanes, and the side-walks will be broader, with the addition of bike lanes. FC Barcelona will shortly be transferring the the site of the CEM Arístides Maillol sports facility to the local council. Work on the area next to Les Corts cemetery will focus on making the area greener by planting pine trees and bushes.
